Oat glucan is a soluble fibre derived from the oat endosperm cell
wall. It is a natural polymer comprised of individual glucose
molecules that a re linked together by a series of beta-(1,3) and
beta-(1,4) linkages. This unique array of linking makes it with
several consumer health benefits, as follows, preventing coronary
heart disease by significantly lowering LDL(Lower Density
Lipoprotein) blood cholesterol and increasing HDL(High Density
Lipoprotein) cholesterol levels, promoting healing of wounds,
stimulating immune cell function, protecting and moisturizing the
skin.
In 1998, the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued its
final rule allowing health claims to be made on the labels of foods
containing soluble fibre from whole oats.
Chemical Structure
Chemical structure of beta-glucan from oats is composed of
beta(1,4)-linked glucose units separated every two to three units
by a single beta(1,3)-linked glucose.
